Six Students Recognized at Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

"Property" by Zainab Malik

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a collaborative award presented by Scholastic Publishing and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a national nonprofit focused on identifying talents of young writers. Scholastic offers three levels of awards for student winners from all over the country: gold key, silver key, and honorable mention. This month, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards recognized six Pleasant View students for their work, which ranged from poems to short stories to painting. This year, every student from PVS who sent in a submission received a Silver Key recognition for their work. The six students are Yasmeen Mannan (9), Zainab Malik (10), Harris Siddiqui (10), Naisha Chowdhury (11), Zahra Chowdhury (11), and Wissal Boudaoud (12). While most of the students applied for the writing awards, Zainab Malik was the only student to submit a piece for the arts award. Malik submitted a painting, titled “Property,”, which focused on “the commodification of the native peoples of South Asia from the time of British colonization to the present day through cheap labor.

Harris Siddiqui, another sophomore, received several Silver Keys for his written works. Harris submitted several pieces including poems, short stories, and science- and flash-fiction pieces.

The Panther's Post would like to congratulate all of our winners!
