Memphis’ First UNICEF Club

This year PVS is excited to announce the founding of its first UNICEF Club and also the first UNICEF club in the city of Memphis. UNICEF, or the United Nations Children's Fund, is a United Nations agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. Students at PVS joined the UNICEF UNITE club program, which is a youth-led movement that campaigns for UNICEF goals in local communities. UNICEF’s main goal is to protect the rights of children and help them meet their basic needs to help the next generation succeed and thrive. Starting a UNICEF club directly reflects PVS’s mission to encourage academic and leadership excellence.

Since UNICEF High School Clubs represent UNICEF USA, they are expected to perform at a certain standard worthy of the UNICEF name. The club is expected to host at least two fundraising events during the year. Also, they must host at least two educational opportunities for young people to learn more about UNICEF’s work and host frequent meetings. By undertaking these challenging tasks PVS students demonstrate the dedication and commitment they have to this noble cause.

Fayadh Chowdhury, an Officer for the PVS UNICEF Club, said, “One of the main mottos of any UNICEF USA club is ‘to think globally and act locally.’ Through this motto, our club has activities that fall into the following categories: fundraising, advocacy, community building, and speaking out. Through these activities, our job is to raise awareness about UNICEF while contributing financially to UNICEF as well.” Naisha Chowdhury, the founder and president, stated, "PVS students partake in so many community service activities locally, nationally, and even internationally. I thought UNICEF would give us the perfect platform to expand our reach and provide us with new opportunities. This is our first year as an official club and we have 15 members, Alhamdulillah. We are open to all high schoolers. We have been planning many fundraising, advocacy, and community building events for our school and local community. We are so excited to work with everyone this year.”

UNICEF provides PVS students with leadership development and gives them the opportunity to make major changes in society. If you are a high school student wanting to make a difference, join the UNICEF club. You can reach out to <naishachowdhury@pv.school>
