Muslim Memphians Show Solidarity with Palestine

On December 10, 2023, the Greater Memphis Muslim Community gathered at Memphis Islamic Center to participate in a car rally through the city of Memphis to show support and solidarity with the people of Palestine. The event, organized by Memphis Voices for Palestine, drew hundreds of participants who decorated their cars with Palestinian keffiyehs and flags. The event was a success as it showcased unity amongst the community, bound together for a common cause. Due to the overwhelming support, there was a second round held on December 24th. The event included the car rally as well as concluded with a Janazah/absentee prayer for those martyred in Gaza.

On January 6th, 2024, the Palestinian American Community Center of Memphis (PACC) organized a Silent March and Children’s Shoe Display. Several hundred gathered in Downtown Memphis to show support for Palestine. They held signs and flags as they marched down Downtown chanting “Free, free Palestine” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” This act of solidarity was a way for Memphis Muslims to show up for the sake of innocent victims of occupation and speak up for the voiceless. One PVS student shared, “Attending these events was an amazing opportunity to stand with my brothers and sisters in Palestine. We were able to amplify our voices and come together as one, under a common purpose.”

Despite the cold weather and rain, the diverse community came together. The event was filled with heartfelt speeches, songs, prayers, and chants, calling for a permanent ceasefire and “an end to the killing of innocent Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, and for a free Palestine.” The shoe display signified the thousands of martyred children. In the end, the shoes were collected to be donated to charity.
